Love in the Modern World: A Dharma Perspective on Valentine’s Day
Love is no longer just in the air it has evolved. In today’s world, love is no longer blind; it sees through the eyes of a generation shaped by modernity and awareness. Relationships are no longer built solely on emotions but also on wisdom and discernment.
So, be wise in whom you choose to love and when. The right person at the right time can make all the difference. Instead of getting carried away by fleeting excitement, embrace love with care, trust, and acceptance free of judgment.
Our connections are deeply tied to karmic bonds formed over countless lifetimes. If two souls are meant to be together, their journey will unfold naturally. But if the karmic causes and conditions are absent, even the strongest efforts cannot force a relationship to work.
This Valentine’s Day, let’s go beyond roses and promises made in excitement. Let’s celebrate love as a commitment one rooted in unconditional acceptance, respect, and gratitude. Whether single, in a relationship, or married, let love be a conscious choice, not just an emotion.
As Dharma practitioners, it is even more crucial to understand the true nature of samsaric cause and effect. Love, when entangled with selfish thoughts and attachment, becomes another form of suffering—a cycle we have been striving to transcend.
True love is not about possession or expectation but about seeing the other person as they are, beyond fleeting emotions and desires. It is about embracing wisdom, understanding karmic conditions, and recognizing that attachment only deepens suffering.
Instead of chasing love as a means of self-fulfillment, let’s cultivate relationships rooted in compassion, equanimity, and selflessness. Whether single, in a relationship, or married, our connections should be guided by the principles of Dharma—free from illusion, grounded in truth, and leading toward liberation.
For those who are single, remember that there is a karmic reason for it. Every phase of life unfolds according to causes and conditions, and there is nothing to fear in walking your path alone. Do not be afraid to make decisions for tomorrow life is ever-changing, and the future is unseen. Embrace each shift with confidence, knowing that every moment brings new opportunities for growth and realization.
At the same time, don’t be afraid to enter a relationship. If you’re waiting for the perfect match, know that perfection does not exist in samsara. Karmic causes and conditions shape every connection, and no relationship is ever without challenges. Instead of seeking an ideal that may never come, be prepared to embrace love as it unfolds without fear, but with an open heart and a wise mind.
Since today holds significance for many, both as a modern celebration and in a deeper, spiritual sense, I felt inspired to share these thoughts.
I wish you all a day filled with blessings. My prayers and best wishes go to all couples, may you remain healthy and strong in your relationships. May you find the wisdom to forgive, let go, and move forward, not bound by the opinions of others but guided by your own inner truth.
May the blessings of Orgyen Maha Guru Rinpoche and a hundred thousand Dakinis be with you all.
